Michigan- upper peninsula

June 28, 2020
Friske Orchard, our Harvest Host had the coolest playground we've ever seen
complete with an ark
 and a full size tractor!

Across the street was the second smallest church in the country
it was sooo cute!
 with 4 little pews

Took a day trip to Mackinac Island
Brought our bikes on the ferry and rode around the island all day.

No cars are allowed on the island.
Everything is done by horse and buggy- taxis, package delivery, garbage pick up, etc.
There are 400 horses, although some were still on the mainland.
The horses all have their jobs, they work 6 hour shifts, 6 days a week, with 1 day off.
These horses were enjoying their day off, however, they would still line up with their
work partner even while off duty.

 Fort Holmes

The ferry took us under the Mackinac Bridge: a 5 mile bridge connecting Michigan with
the upper peninsula of Michigan. The towers stand 550' above the water,  210' below the
water to the bedrock, and 400' down into the bedrock!
It took 4 years to build, cost $100 million, and takes 70,000 gallons of paint- to paint
this bridge!

Matriarchal society- would have been inhabited by the grandmother
and her family, unlike the Ojibwa which were patriarchal.

Kitchi-ti-kipi 'Big Spring'
Ride a raft out to center of the pond
Cold spring bubbling up- water so clear you can see to the bottom 45' deep.
Full of retired trout 2-4' long

July 5-6, 2020
Stayed at Pete's campground in the Hiawatha National Forest.
Right on Bruno's Run Mountain Biking single track trail.
 Awesome ride!
As long as you don't stop too long- or the mosquitoes will find you.

Miner's Castle

Miner's Beach
Apparently this is the place to kayak: Ken counted 90 kayaks lined up on the beach!

We kayaked all day- it was so cool!

The minerals dripping down the sandstone walls made the most beautiful paintings.

Massive painted walls
Ken looks so small in his kayak
